What are secret areas?

• Secret areas are additional spaces that are usually hidden from the player and require thoughtful effort to access them.
• They delight the player by offering something that rewards him/her for his/her effort.

They should provide the player with a significant reward for accessing them (be it a power-up or an unusual area) otherwise the player will feel that his/her thoughtful effort was wasted.

In some instances, the player may have to exit the secret area from the same route that s/he used to access it. If this is the case, then it is even more important that the alternative route offers something of interest to compensate the player for crossing a space twice.
